History
Ada Beckett was bitten by the acting bug when she was four. Singing, dancing, whatever it took to get positive attention, she was up to her eyeballs in it. Born and raised in south London, she attended drama school for a year before she was offered a role on EastEnders. Her character proved popular with audiences, but in the interest of looking into other projects, she was written off when her contract expired, and she did not renew. Her character is currently in a coma after a car accident, and her family exploring treatment options in Switzerland. If Ada ever returns to the show, the storyline has been left open, in a sense, for her to wake up.
In the meantime, however, she's taken the role of Miss Elinor Ashe, the ward of the Duke of Oakmonde, in the BBC's hot new period drama, Bournewood. There was some grumbling in comments sections of websites when news of the casting was made public, but there's no room for bigotry in this BBC production, and Ada is determined to give her everything to the part, having dreamed for years of having this kind of chance. She's more than a little nervous to think of the caliber of cast and crew she'll be working with, and hopes she can meet their expectations of her, and maybe even surprise them (pleasantly.)
Ada has always relied on the love and support of her parents, her big sister Katie, and her little brother Rob to keep her grounded. No doubt they're proud of their girl, but she's still just their little Ada, no matter what.
She hasn't dated much. She's been too busy with her work, and then rather shy of the media scrutiny the few times she DID seriously see anyone for any length of time. None of her breakups have been too bad, however--she still has to imagine what she thinks heartbreak feels like, in order to play it. There's no particular hurry for her to find love, though.
Ada has opted to rent rooms in Penchurch during filming, staying in the converted top-floor suite of an adorable little house at the end of a row just off of Penchurch's main street. Her landlord and landlady are a sweet elderly couple, both half-deaf, but very accommodating and kind.
Appearance
Ada is barely over 5 feet tall, but she makes up for what she may lack in height with her bubbly and outgoing personality. She has light brown skin, hazel eyes, and naturally curly hair, which she dyes anything from blonde to black as her whimsy takes her, but for her role in Bournewood it's currently a natural shade of dark brown. When she's working she usually dresses down for comfort and ease, but never passes up an opportunity to glam it up for special occasions.
Personality
Ada is every inch the ingenue. Though she's familiar with working in television from the last couple of years, she knows that Bournewood is in a different league. From her point of view, it's the biggest show and role she's had to date. She's excited to be bringing a fresh perspective and complexity to the role of a naive but fiery young woman moving in the aristocratic circles as well as village life during the early 19th century.
Though Ada herself strives to be a kind and generous person, she's also had to take more than her share of crap from beginning to be rather famous at a comparatively young age. She tries to handle attention graciously, but she's had a few uncomfortable interactions with the press and the occasional over-eager fan, and her fear is the kind that expresses itself as a brief burst of anger, before Ada flees to somewhere safe until she can stop shaking.
Outgoing and bubbly, Ada likes to make sure everyone feels at-ease in her company...even if only to cover for the fact that she often feels a little out of her depth, lately. Once she gets comfortable with someone, the filter comes off, and it can be difficult to shut her up. When she has her self-control in place, she can hold her tongue and be quite professional; but when her nerves take over, she get chatty, anyhow. Really chatty.
Ada has a sweet-tooth, and it's a struggle for her to consider her duty to the poor souls who have to fit her for costumes before she falls into a mountain of chocolate whenever she's stressed or happy or bored.
She likes to believe in the best of people, and look for the silver lining in situations. Sometimes this leads her to be disappointed when things don't measure up to her expectations, and so she's learning to approach things with the caution of maturity, and not always take things at their face-value. Though she doesn't like to be brutal in honesty, Ada does place high value on telling the truth and being as genuine as possible.
Ada is a bit of an old soul and a dyed-in-the-wool romantic...which is why her role as Elinor Ashe is such a dream come true. Riding boots, breeches, corsets, candlelight...she gets a goofy grin on her face just from thinking about it. She's usually one of the first actors to arrive on set and one of the last to leave, soaking in all she can of the atmosphere and her surroundings. Penchurch Abbey is a breathtaking location, and the village a breath of fresh air, with peace and quiet in its low-level bustle, and Ada is happy to explore it and relax by the seaside whenever she has a break from filming.
