McDermot, Katherine- Commonly known as Kate
Age:
32
History
Kate McDermot was born in the Scottish Highlands, and spent her childhood and teen years there. This has left her with a strong accent that is probably there to stay, and sometimes makes her a little difficult to understand, especially when she is angry. Her father was a farmer, while her mother was a veterinary surgeon. Kate defied all family expectations by breaking the family tradition of working with animals and attending a reputable school of drama in Edinburgh, then moving to London in order to continue her studies. She soon found, despite her natural talent in acting, that she preferred being 'behind the camera' directing to acting in front of it (possible because she doesn’t cope well with being told what to do). This led to her making her own film at the age of 27. The film was a huge success considering how small the budget had been, and it won several awards and was entered in the Edinburgh Film Festival, coming out in second place. It must have caught the eye of someone influential, since Kate found herself being offered a job by ITV only a few weeks later. She took the job and made a big success of it, but when she was approached by the BBC quite a few years later, she accepted the offer instantly. She considered the BBC as the pinnacle of the British television industry, and was privileged to work for it. Bournewood will be her first drama production, though she has done several documentaries, and she is taking the role of 2nd assistant director with some apprehension but a lot of enthusiasm and a determination to do the best that she possibly can in hope of getting to work on some of the BBC’s biggest shows. She has dreamed of directing dramas since graduating, and is looking forward to the future with great optimism.
Appearance
Kate has dark hair that is definitely brunette but is edging towards black. She is tall and willowy, which would have been a godsend had she decided to become an actress. Her nails are always perfectly manicured, and her skin is tanned from working outdoors on documentaries in locations as varied as the Scilly Isles and Madagascar. When working, she follows the ancient theatrical tradition of 'thou shalt have no fashion sense' and wears all black. When not working, she dresses more casually, usually in a blouse and trousers, or a suit when she's pretending to be civilised. She never wears skirts. Even though she knows it's a cliche, Kate still loves tartan.
Personality
Kate is a perfectionist, which her superiors love and her actors and crew hate. She does produce very high quality material, even on a limited budget, which is the reason why she is where she is today. She is strict and exacting with those who work under her, but never unkind, and she doesn't ask anyone to do anything that she wouldn't do herself. She is just as hard on herself as she is on others, working long hours and repeating the same thing over and over again until she gets it just right. This tenacity is one of her best features- she never gives up on something and it can always be better.
Outside working hours, Kate is actually a very easygoing, laid back person. She'll go along with pretty much anything you care to suggest, and she gets on well with many people simply because she can't be bothered to disagree with them. Optimism and cheerfulness are the tenet's of Kate's faith, and they have helped her through many things which she might not have survived otherwise. Her permanent smile can be irritating for some, especially after a while. There are times when the smile disappears however- it doesn't happen often, but when it does, look out! It's not easy to annoy Kate, but if anyone somehow manages it, they will live to regret it. Kate's Scottish blood shows in her fiery temper, and when it is roused she will use both sarcasm and just plain shouting until her opponent is defeated and she gets her way- whether that's the other person shutting up, or the camera being repositioned.
Kate's also not above a little jealousy. Her job and her friends are precious quantities to her, and anyone that could be seen as a threat to either one of these is subject to careful scrutiny, and potentially extreme coldness until she reaches a final decision, at which point they will either be welcomed warmly into her life, or thrown out of it, never to be seen again. With any luck. It's not for nothing that Kate has such a terrible reputation amongst her fellow directors in the industry, and at the BBC especially. She has, in fact, been nicknamed 'the Dragon'.
Kate is, to coin an oft-used phrase, 'married to her job'. She has never had a boyfriend since she was 15, and that was a complicated affair that ended in tears since she discovered that he had not one but two other girlfriends. Needless to say, she split up with him, and it is a distinct possibility that this has caused her lack of interest in men ever since, though Kate refuses to confirm or deny this. She does have a large number of friends, though, needless to say, most of them work in other industries! She gets on well enough with her co-workers, but none of them have really become close friends, at least up to now... She hopes to find some new friends amongst the villagers, since she expects to be in Penchurch for a while.
