History
Luke is a born and bred 'Penny'. His family goes back several generations in the village, principally having lived and worked on a farm not far from Penchurch Abbey, still owned by the family and currently run by his older brother. Luke grew up on the farm, and could probably take over from his brother without a moment's disruption in the usual workings of the place, if need be.
Though he did well in school, Luke never had any desire to go to university. He has an aptitude for working with his hands that made some of his family make encouraging remarks about engineering, but Luke couldn't stand the thought of working in an office, drawing things for other people to build. For as long as he could recall, he most enjoyed fixing up things around the farm--especially the machinery. He began hanging around the garage in the village when he was twelve, and was hired on for the summer when he was thirteen. Luke now owns the garage, himself, including the small petrol station, and has a handful of staff he oversees with genial good-humour, though he insists on doing a job right the first time, and asking for help if you need it. Most of the time he tinkers with vehicles of all sorts around the back, and if there is an unhappy engine puttering through Penchurch, he'll hear it like a siren's call.
Luke also runs a side-business as a self-taught handy-man. He couldn't manage an entire plumbing refit, or lay out the electrics in a house, but when people are in a pinch, Luke throws all his tools into the back of his work van and goes off to see if he can help. He can handle most home-based emergencies, but has a short-list of recommended contractors from town whose numbers he hands out when needed. Any given day might see him fixing a wobble in a bannister, putting a tiny screw back into someone's glasses, and clearing someone's gutters of fallen leaves. Luke doesn't much mind what he does, if he figures he can help someone out.
Appearance
Luke has an open expression--and so he generally looks cheerful and content. His curly brown hair and brown eyes are nothing out of the common way, but there's a boyish handsomeness to his features that's made him something of a darling to the so-inclined ladies of the village. He's a few inches over six feet tall, a bit lanky, but his active work keeps him fitter than perhaps he seems at first glance. (Same work putting calluses on his hands and dirt under his nails, more like than not.) As he's often daubed in mud or engine-grease, Luke isn't overly particular about his clothes, most days.
Personality
Luke is a true gentleman, if not entirely of the old school. His own mental workings and his tendency to gravitate towards opinionated women (his mother having a will, mind, and tongue of her own, running the family as adroitly as his father ran the farm,) have given him healthy respect alongside his deference, and his chivalry tends to draw the line at condescension. His helpfulness extends to anyone in need, but he does recognise some of the disadvantages of the female state, and is glad to do his bit, when he can, to level the playing field. Even when it's such a small thing as clearing old Mrs. Fawcett's gutters--though that has more to do with her arthritis than her sex.
Luke is close to his family. His parents have retired to a converted outbuilding in the back of the farm property, but can often be found in the farmhouse, now occupied by Luke's brother and his wife and two children. Being the apple of many a Penny elder's eye, there's some muttering that the 'boy' hasn't gotten married, or even particularly serious about anyone, yet. Luke shrugs this off--he's in no hurry to 'settle'. As far as he's concerned, he IS settled. He likes his life as it is.
Luke never had the yen to get out of Penchurch, as others have done. Penchurch is in his blood, and he's happy.
Despite all this, and his simple pleasures and pursuits, Luke is clever enough. He just doesn't always speak up, when others might. Once he gets to know people, he's quick to tease and joke, and he can have a bit of a petulant temper once in a blue moon, if something's bothering him, but his personality is generally friendly and unassuming.
