History
Kay was born to an orthopedic surgeon and a caterer and had a solidly middle-class upbringing in Scotland until she was sent off to uni. Unlike most people, she found her calling young and stuck to it; from the time she was tiny she loved to sing, act, and write, and surprisingly, her parents did not object whatsoever. Not even when the tuition to top schools increased by ludicrous percentages; not even at the ages of 13, 15, and 18, when she declared that she was going to be an actress forever. No, she didn't get any satisfaction of shock out of them, and her greatest argument with her mother was over getting a larger trash can. (At least, it had started as an argument about getting a larger trash can...)
It was not a perfect life, especially after her father was charged with medical malpractice and had to find different work as a janitor, but it was a pretty comfortable one until she met Emily. And, well, at that point she was well fucked. Emily was neither impressed by her beauty nor her considerable talent, nor attracted by her sweetness; Emily was the heir to untold wealth and used it to wear things that looked like they'd washed up from a shipwreck; Emily possessed a deep attraction that, strictly from a social standards perspective, made no sense; Emily had freckles and Kay would rather get punched full in the face by Tom Hardy (and lose whatever teeth she'd lose) than have Emily lose those freckles.
It took her seven long years of in and out, chasing and finding, inviting to plays and being invited to concerts and making out while drunk and trying to interpret utterly mystifying signals, but she finally got her first date at the end of seven long years. By that time, they were in London, and Kay was relieved to at the very least find out that she could make a decent living as a stage actress. After the first date, they discovered there was not much more they needed to learn, not much more they needed to think about, after those seven years of what friends later insisted /was in fact dating./ So they married the next spring, the same spring that Kay landed the role of Ophelia. She was twenty-three and she was sure that she had discovered real happiness.
Eight years later, she's not sure what happened. She had prepared herself to be a mother; they'd planned it all out perfectly, and the baby had been born dead, and those were facts. The bit that came after, the empty place, was more than enough to expose to her and her wife that they had been rather counting on the new arrival to save a relationship that needed a bit of saving. It didn't help that Emily's massive wealth was a constant source of arguments (Emily liked Nice Things, while Kay liked but didn't need them and certainly didn't need to have her wife constantly paying for them.)
Finally, they separated. A trial separation was what it was called, but Kay felt sure that it was only called "trial" to prevent more fighting. After that, she worked harder than she'd ever worked in her life to land a TV role. She wanted to get away from London and away from the circle of theater people that knew her and Emily so well, and she wanted something new and special to call her own, even if, deep down, she had no actual ambitions. It worked, though. She is now Lady Theodora Montrose, and relieved to be away at last, even if "away" is just a motel in a pretty standard town with a longish commute and a job that she's not wholly sure she's qualified for.
Appearance
Kay is, in and out of modern beauty standards, lovely. Her brown eyes are extremely expressive, and when in their default expression, look mildly warm and pleasant. The one flaw in her otherwise remarkable good looks is that when she laughs or smiles genuinely, her mouth can open to a rather enormous, unpretty size, so she tries to avoid that, though sometimes things are too funny to resist. Her style choices are simple: she likes to wear her hair down when she can; she tends to wear feminine, modest clothes in earth tones, which suits her; and she uses "natural" makeup every day and only takes it off right before bed.
Personality
Extremely sociable, Kay is at her happiest when she is hanging out with her colleagues and friends. The overlap between those two groups is usually large, and she enjoys widening it as much as she can every day, often seeking out new people or anyone that looks like they could use a quick joke. She is quite used to comfortable mornings and evenings balanced out by lengthy and taxing rehearsals, and she was, two or three years ago, quite content with that. Now she's trying new things, but she finds she doesn't like them quite so much. Ah well.
As amiable as she is friendly, it takes a lot to overcome Kay's patience. Unfortunately, that flexibility can often lead into evasiveness. Rather than be forced to make a stand and argue, Kay would rather turn the conversation into something else, and rather than deal with something unpleasant, Kay would rather craft a socially-acceptable escape. As a result, she has been accused of disloyalty before, something which she once was able to refute with her longstanding marriage and now generally tries not to think about. Perhaps this is because Kay is a rather emotional person and can be deeply upset (or deeply inspired) by a fifteen minute conversation with a total stranger. Generally speaking, she tries to hide this tendency because feeling so much is often distressing to other people, or at least other people rarely know how to deal with it. When she's on her period, usually, all she does is go to rehearsals and go to bed. Only when acting doe she feel fully capable and fully encouraged to let loose. Empathy is her weapon of choice.
Oh, yeah, and when she's tipsy. There's that too. Kay is a bit of a bon vivant; she has developed a taste for cooking and drinking and going to other people's productions and sniffing round auction houses for signed copies of old books. Her pride now is making her cut back a little, as she refuses to touch her wife's bank account, but her self-control is a fairly weak muscle and she's desperately bored without her usual congeries of parties, auctions, weddings, banquets, galleries, and plays. She very much looks forward to when shooting the series starts and she can focus all her attention on learning this new craft of working with the cameras.
