Character Name: Hannah Trewith
Age: 19
History: A born-and-bred Penny, Hannah is the youngest of three daughters born to local farmers Ruan and Mae. Her sisters, Morgan and Fen(ella), are two and four years older than her respectively.
Ever since childhood, Hannah seemed to have no concept of the world all outside her own head – one particular night at the age of thirteen, after her sisters and parents had spent the day tending to the vegetable plots, Hannah came outside, ‘liberated’ Hetty the pony and together they danced and ran around in the vegetables, which were in tatters by morning.
Her family was never angry with her for such escapades. They recognised that although she was at first glance a strange, perhaps even mad young person, her unusual outlook on the world did not have to be a bad thing. Growing up she quickly developed a penchant for art and beauty in all its forms, and indeed no-one was more intensely focused than Hannah when she was outlining the tiny details of a blade of grass, or carefully eyeing the sea foam through a camera lens.
This explanation would not suffice at school however. While her manner and dress sense was treated with some leniency at the village primary, at the big secondary school in town she was so badly bullied that her parents would have home-educated her if it weren’t for the fact that she seemed entirely unruffled by everything. As far as the teachers were concerned, after being shunted in and out of various special help initiatives and psychotherapy offices, Hannah’s inability to concentrate on ordinary tasks and gentle disregard for the uniform code meant an incredibly rocky relationship with the school, and she was glad to see the back of it after the failure of almost all of her GCSEs.
While Morgan and Fen ended up at top-flight universities (the London School of Economics and Durham respectively), Hannah remains in Penchurch, where there is no shortage of interesting things to paint and the Bournewood unit has arrived in all its period beauty. She has vague ambitions to open a gallery of her own in the village or sell some of the art she creates, but without Morgan’s financial skill she has no real motivation.
Appearance: Hannah is shorter than average and thin, in a way that makes her look much younger than she is. She was the only sister to have inherited her father’s blonde hair, which she sometimes remembers to brush, and she has reasonably pale skin for the amount of time she spends outside. Her eyes are pale blue, giving her a somewhat vague expression, but if you tell her something important she will listen intently. Her smile is friendly and she is always willing to find interesting people to talk to in Penchurch.
Her actual clothing is ordinary, consisting of heavy knitted jumpers, skirts and tights, and loose dresses in the summer. But every day she looks a different kind of odd: random feathers and braids in her hair, brightly-coloured homemade string bracelets adorning her arms, and intricate patterns inked on her skin in biro or paint. She usually wears pendants with a different hunk of sparkling stone, very concerned with crystals and what each one symbolizes.
Personality: On the surface, Hannah appears a simple soul, floating through life without a care in the world. But she is fiercely devoted to what she loves, both in terms of her artwork and her family. She will completely cut herself off from life, forgetting to sleep, eat or talk until that drawing is just the way she envisioned it. This has been known to be so extreme that she once ended up close to a dangerously low weight and didn’t speak to her family in six days. When Fen dated a horrible, manipulative boy in sixth form, Hannah was the first to notice.
Her primary hobby is art, be it painting, drawing, photography, textiles, jewellery-making, sculpture, anything. She also frequently goes on long walks around the village, and occasionally rides horses on the farm, although never further as she never properly learned to use a saddle, or helmet. She may be absent-minded, but even she recognizes she would be a hazard to herself…
Hannah is also very interested in mythology and folklore, particularly that of Cornwall, always having been fascinated by where she lives. With this in mind, when she was seven her parents bought her two books: a book of crystals and their meanings, and a book about Cornish legends, and both remain among her most prized possessions even now. One of her dreams is to visit ancient pagan sites and participate in real summer solstice festivals.
However, this dream is unlikely to be achieved as she hates to travel. She has never visited her sisters at their universities because her head feels foggy and ill on cars, buses and trains. She is a bit of a Luddite when it comes to any kind of machinery in general, not owning a mobile phone and not even really sure how to use a computer. While she doesn’t get panicky or stressed when faced with such things, they all contribute to that foggy feeling in her head and she feels fatigued, distant, and even more unable to concentrate than usual. It is this feeling that only fresh air and walking can solve, and perhaps an interesting conversation.
She is at her most relaxed and at peace with herself when she is contemplating beauty. One of the many reasons she was labeled Weird at school was for gazing unabashedly at the beautiful girls she came across.
Despite her failings at school, she is not stupid. While you could not hold down any kind of academic conversation without instantly being met with those vague pale eyes, she understands humans. She has a sixth sense for upset or tension, and will always try and help resolve it in a way that avoids conflict. She is the perfect person to go to if feeling sad or alone as she values promises as highly as life, and would never ever tell a secret.
