Character Name: Rosanna Roscoe
Age: 25
History
The only daughter and youngest child of Sir Trevor Roscoe and his wife Laura, Rosanna had a very privileged upbringing in many ways. Though she attended the village school as a child, she and her brother shared a private tutor, who prepared them to attend boarding-school when they were older. As a result, she only really spent holidays at the Abbey from the age of twelve.
With her mother's untimely death two years later, the remaining family members made even fewer trips out to Penchurch--perhaps preferring the compact and busy lifestyle in a London townhouse to the memories which haunted the open spaces and grand, silent rooms of Penchurch Abbey.
Rosanna attended university, studying art history; but her life as a young woman has been largely that of a London socialite, attending parties, knowing the right people, and doing the occasional bit of charity work for the usual sorts of good causes. Her father threw himself into work and her brother threw himself into the usual sorts of poor-little-rich-boy rebellion, and it was all Rosanna could do to hold the family together in the wake of Laura's death. There's much less quarreling, now, as they all seem to have silently agreed to live and let live, and money isn't any particular concern for them.
Rosanna has returned to Penchurch following the Christmas holidays to help get the house ready for filming, as well as being the on-site advocate in the absence of her father, who continues to prefer his work in London. In addition to this necessary reason for her presence is the sensational bit of social gossip which has followed her from London: having been dating a shipping magnate for the past eighteen months, with an engagement expected to be forthcoming over Christmas or the New Year, in time for a summer wedding, Rosanna and her boyfriend have very suddenly and publicly parted ways, without a word from either as to why. The press would adore any insight into this little drama, but so far it's only manifested in the occasional photographer with a telephoto lens or a too-slick tabloid journalist skulking around town--soon spotted and sent packing by Pennys, who remain fond of the Roscoe family, if only out of old loyalties, or pity for the girl they used to know, or for the sake of her poor mother's memory.
Rosanna is polite to people in town, but largely remains aloof, smiling faintly if anyone says "remember when..." before moving the conversation on to something else. She keeps herself busy up at the abbey, and that seems to be enough for her, for now.
Appearance
Rosanna is of average height, at 5'6", with a pale complexion, long, straight brown hair, and light brown eyes. She dresses with the kind of feminine elegance and conservative taste that signifies old money and a strict upper-class education, though in unguarded moments at home she seems to prefer the comfort of worn blue-jeans, boots, button-down shirts, and soft woolly jumpers.
Personality
Rosanna Roscoe is the daughter of a class system and way of life which belongs to another generation, and as a result, doesn't quite seem to really fit in anywhere. She tries to make herself a chameleon, or float along the surface of things, just so it doesn't become too obvious that she's a square-peg toff. Her mother was the perfect society wife and mother, but it's the 21st century and a woman must now pursue absolutely everything in order to be taken seriously.
Rosanna certainly believes in feminism and all that, but then she devoted the last few years of her life to a rather superficial party-girl existence, and until recently she seemed entirely prepared to marry a rich man and spend the rest of her days furnishing lavish houses, giving lavish parties, and raising her children to do the same. She's caught between what she knows herself to be and what she feels she ought to be, and rather than get down to the difficult work of figuring herself out, she'd rather ignore it for as long as possible and just do...anything else.
She's a kind person who wants to do good, though this often takes the form of monetary donations rather than hands-on work. In London, she had quite a few friends and seemed to have fun with them, but she hasn't been in touch with many of them since her breakup with her boyfriend--which none of them can fathom. Whether Rosanna simply can't bear their well-meant curiosity and comfort, or if the split with her old friends is a symptom of something else remains to be seen...
In her habits and tastes, she's a pretty expensive girl, though through quirks of human nature, from time to time she'll indulge in some seriously low-rent vices with a measure of knowing guilt that's perhaps increased by her usual standoffish elegance and superiority.
Rosanna is a little strange, in that sometimes she can put on a persona which seems to be many years older than she actually is, and at other times she can be a total brat, giving in to her every selfish, spoilt impulse with vicious pettiness and scathing sarcasm. It's not often she gets visibly angry, though--she'll prefer to hide away from most conflict, rather than talk anything out. Though Rosanna has no difficulty making conversation, talking properly is not something anyone is used to doing in the Roscoe family. Is it healthy? Definitely not; but it's how they've managed to come through the dark years since Laura Roscoe died.
At first, Rosanna can seem cold to many people, and it's not an illusion she hastens to dispel. Distancing herself is her greatest talent, and her most common means of protecting herself from whatever she does not like. She doesn't want to seem snobby, but at times she can't quite help it--she's spent too long enjoying the ease that comes with class and money, and doesn't quite want to let it go.
After all, take that away, and who is she, really?
Rosanna secretly rather worries that she's nothing at all.
