Character Name: Dr. Theodore ["Teddy"] Meredith
Age: 29
History
Teddy Meredith has been the GP in Penchurch for a little over a year, now.
Brought up in Swansea by a single mum on benefits, Teddy was a serious but warm-hearted child from the day he was born, studying hard to try and make life better for his mother, and other mothers, and anyone who was struggling. With this worldview, he went to study medicine on a full scholarship when he left school with 5 A-levels.
Having qualified as a doctor, he worked with a hospital in Cardiff before a friend told him to apply for the job in Penchurch. The elderly man who had been the local GP in the village for many years was retiring, and Penchurch was so out-of-the-way that not many people at all had applied for the position. Teddy did, and has been granted the job at the little surgery which is approximately the size of a postage stamp. The reception area and his office/examination room take up the whole lower floor of a little house one street back from the beach, and the two upper floors make up the cozy flat in which Teddy now lives. (The former doctor being a family man, he had a larger house just outside the village, and the flat was rented to various people over the years, and luckily came available just as Teddy was looking at moving to the village.) The first floor contains a full bathroom, sitting-room, and kitchen, while the extension above has a bedroom and ensuite beneath the eaves. From the upper windows it has a view towards the sea.
Of course he's an outsider, but he is a doctor, and generous with his time and patience, which has gone a long way towards making him accepted in the little community, so far.
That and he's a young, unattached doctor who is not at all unpleasant to look at.
Appearance
Teddy is of average height and build, with dark brown hair (usually a bit on the messy side of things) and brown eyes. He's a little overfond of junk food and stodgy English meals and puddings, but maintains pretty good balance with running and swimming around Penchurch where his schedule and the weather permits. He has a pass to a gym in town, but it's a 30 minute drive each way and he can't always justify going solely for that. If he has errands in town, he tries to squeeze in a workout around it. His clothes tend to be practical and comfortable, though when he is in his office he realizes a more professional appearance comforts some people, so he makes an effort with button-down shirts and suit trousers and jackets...but if he wears a tie, chances are ten to one that he's ditched it and unbuttoned the top of his collar by 10 am.
Personality
Kindness has been the cornerstone of Teddy's character for as long as he can recall. What is necessary and true are also important to him, but is it kind? is the question he generally tends to dwell on, when mulling something over. Given his work, he does occasionally have to break unpleasant truths to people, but he strives to do it in as careful a manner as possible.
He loves his mother and does his best to look after her, even when he's far from Swansea, sending much of whatever money he makes to help her out. She's still in the same council flat he's known all his life, but she's a little more comfortable, and a little less stressed than she used to be, making sure he had clothes to wear, food to eat, and a safe place to study and grow. Teddy knows he can only guess at the sorts of sacrifices she made for him, and he's determined to do right by her in any way her can. The years of hard graft and worry haven't made her the most demonstrative of women, but Teddy knows how much she cares.
Having been bullied as a child (for the usual reasons...mostly poverty and his lack of a father,) Teddy is swift to champion anybody who seems to be an underdog, in just about any cause. He's not exactly a knight in shining armour to anybody, as his kind of helping tends to be the sort that wants to get people away from a fight and into a place of safety, rather than jumping into the fray and emerging bloodied but victorious. Peaceful resolution is the outcome he most hopes for, and generally he's been successful in this. It's difficult to imagine what could push Teddy to more overt interference or even outright revenge, as he's not usually a bitter or vengeful person, but anyone who picks on women and children or people otherwise less able to defend themselves would be the likeliest targets for whatever rage he might feel.
Teddy can be quick to joke and laugh to lighten the moods of others, but when things get serious, he can get very quiet, very quickly. He can be socially awkward, which comes of having had a slightly isolated and difficult childhood. He has a few friends from back home, and from university, and is friendly with just about everybody he comes into contact with, but sometimes he feels very alone. It doesn't help that Penchurch can sometimes be more superficially welcoming rather than truly embracing newcomers, but the passage of time is helping him to feel more at home. He's swift to laugh off his own awkwardness, rather than dwell on it.
Overall, Teddy is, at first glance, a cheerful, helpful, and intelligent young man who can stay calm and pragmatic in a crisis, and offers comfort where he can. Those who know him better, however, can guess that there are surprising depths to the kind young doctor.
