Character Name: Ruby [goes by 'Roo' among friends] Elliott.
Age: 28
History
Ruby moved to Penchurch with her parents (Ellen and Craig) when she was two, and although for most purposes she is accepted as one of the village, the few quirks in her past were no doubt explained away with shaking heads by some as 'she's not from around here.'
An only child, she grew up happily in the village, but when she went to school in town, she began to crave something of the wider world. Always up for an adventure, Roo could scarcely wait to go off and see something of the world. As soon as she could manage it, she moved to London, thrilled by city life, and eventually working her way into a job at a prestigious film production company (though very low on that ladder).
She thrived, and had no thought of returning to Penchurch until she was old and grey, however much she missed her parents. She was building a new life for herself, and couldn't see any reason to throw it away.
When she was 24, however, Ruby found herself in a sticky situation--having recently ended a relationship (both busy career people feeling it was moving 'too fast', however much they liked one another,) sitting in the loo, staring at a positive pregnancy test.
She could have quietly ended it, and gone back to her life, but for the first time, Ruby felt something almost like a sense of direction. This felt right.
Of course she couldn't face raising a child by herself in the city, and there would be the awkward questions raised by the young man she was no longer seeing outside of a professional context, and so she quietly handed in her notice, keeping her reasons for doing so as vague as possible. No one could have ascribed it to heartbreak--she'd had far worse break-ups than the one with Kim. 'A family matter' was about as specific as she'd let it get, and that was that.
Ruby was a little surprised and almost hurt by the ease with which she abandoned her life in London--not the trappings of it, but the friends. Once she wasn't laughing beside them in city wine bars or sharing cabs, things just seemed to fade away. She reasoned with herself that this was probably for the best, particularly as it became more difficult to avoid referring to her pregnancy.
Finding herself back in Penchurch, Roo felt a sense of relief mingled with regret, in some respects. There were parts of London she missed, and still misses; but she knows she made the right decision for herself and her daughter.
Four years later, she is a fixture in Penchurch, as much as she ever was.
She picked up some work at the bakery, and found she had a knack for it--she is currently the baker largely responsible for all the bread, cakes, and other yummy things being served at Cecily's, as well as letting the spare room of the cottage she and her daughter live in for short and long-term guests, to help with her mortgage payments.
Her daughter, named for her grandmother, called Ellie to tell them apart, is a happy, healthy four year old. Her parents' house, at the other end of the village, is like a second home to them (indeed it was home, while Ruby got back on her feet and saved money,) and Ellie loves spending time with her grandparents--a blessing, when Ruby needs a moment to herself!
All in all, Roo has made herself content in Penchurch, for the time being.
Appearance
Ruby is 5'6", and wears her dark brown hair mostly scraped back from her face, due to her work. She has green-brown eyes, a scattering of freckles, and a friendly smile, though she's always thought her mouth a little too wide for her own liking. Her figure isn't quite as slender as it was years ago--between baby and bakery she's not the girl she once was, but all the cycling to and fro helps to keep her fit enough. She dresses casually--jeans and t-shirts for work, a jumper when she's cold. She's still not the 'girly' type, and hardly has time for much by make-up or feminine style.
Personality
Ruby is a warm, friendly, and outgoing person, though she does have her quiet moments when she's troubled or tired. She generally has a great deal of energy in the day, being an early riser, but her own bedtime is not long after Ellie's, most nights. She is perhaps more liberal in most of her views than many lifelong Penchurch residents, but whether it's because she wasn't born in Penchurch or because she spent so many years in the city, it's hard to tell. It's clear that Ellie's father is black, but Penchurch in general is no longer scandalised by such matters--though some would have preferred Ruby to have brought along a husband with her baby, or even a boyfriend.
Her romantic prospects have been somewhat dimmed by her own preoccupation with motherhood, and Roo hasn't much bothered to seek out anyone in particular in the village--she knows most of the lads her age far too well. A bit of football is fine, but none has ever seen her as anything other than one of the boys. Likewise, Roo has never found the rural set quite stimulated her, intellectually, as the professionals she knew back in London. Not that she doubts intellectuals exist in Penchurch--it's just difficult to ease into topics like literature or philosophy, and with boys you've known for as long as you can remember, never having talked about such things before.
Roo and Ellie are a well-liked pair around the village, despite Roo's outspoken ways and penchant for progressiveness--she has heartily welcomed the changes set to boost Penchurch's connection with the wider world. (Perhaps another sign of her being From Elsewhere.)
Despite her having settled in Penchurch, Roo still has a taste for adventure, and her parents worry this may one day carry their daughter--and granddaughter--away from Penchurch once more.
