Character Name: Jean-Laurent “Jeannot” François Pedro Morales d’Aubin
Age: 31
History
Jeannot was born in London to a Guatemalan mother and a French father who split soon thereafter, whereupon Jeannot’s mother Jimena moved them to the US. Suffice it to say, his career has been as eclectic and international as his upbringing.
Between visits to his mother’s family in Guatemala, his father’s in France, and his father himself in London, Jeannot grew up a cultured young man, and was encouraged in his academic and performative pursuits. The latter certainly interested him more than the former, not least because of the positive attention it gained him from a distant and scattered family. He attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan and then NYU’s Tisch School, where he dropped out to begin his career in earnest after two years.
As upbringings go it was a little rootless, and he has always felt comfortable moving to new places. When LA didn’t work out, he traveled to London to try his luck with theater and with his father’s second family--a French wife and a spiky little sister, Lunete. He surprised even himself by finding plenty of work in theater and television, meeting Rawdon Montgomery during this time and forging a lasting, publicity-friendly friendship. His eventual return to LA was met with much more success than his first attempt, and he has had regular work in movies ever since.
The opportunity to work in British television again beckoned, and Jeannot was delighted to find himself reading against his good friend for the part of the Duke, and even happier to win it. Best of all, however, Monty took a role as his valet, which means they’ll have the opportunity to work closely together. Jeannot is renting a small holiday house outside of town and bringing his charming personality and his cat to Penchurch with him.
Appearance
Jeannot is very, very handsome. His hair is dark and thick and curling, with a full beard when he chooses to grow it out, and warm dark eyes to match. He has a charmingly crooked and crinkly grin, broad shoulders, and perhaps a little less height than a leading man could hope for--at 5’9”, however, he’s no shrimp, and his build is solid enough to keep him from looking at all out of place among his peers. His looks are brooding in spite of his personality; that said, he dresses himself as one could expect from an American actor in his 30s: trendy with a hint of the ridiculous or childish, and likes sporting humorous facial hair between jobs. He definitely has a good-luck pair of Star Wars underwear.
Personality
Jeannot likes to think he’s suave. While he’s certainly charming, he doesn’t seem to be aware that it’s not for the reasons he hopes, and that lack of awareness only seems to make him more endearing. As handsome as he is and always has been, it’s not like a touch of the ridiculous could really hurt his chances, either in his career or in his love life. There have been a veritable parade of attractive arm pieces, though none that seemed to last long.
It wasn’t for lack of trying, though. Suave he may fancy himself, but a womanizer Jeannot actually is not; things just never seemed to click with him and any of the admirable ladies who agreed to accompany him to events and to his bedroom. Almost all of these liaisons ended amicably, and at present he is unattached and focusing on his work.
Perhaps his childhood and adolescence, spent jetting between his far-flung family, had something to do with that. Some couples are perfectly capable of divorcing and raising entirely well-adjusted children together. Jimena Maria Morales and François d’Aubin were not that type of couple. They barely communicated other than to organize Jeannot’s visits, and neither was a particularly warm parent. Jeannot’s most positive familial relationship wound up being with his younger sister, somewhat by accident, and as a result he is wonderful at superficial relationships but genuinely at a loss when it comes to deeper ones.
That said, he clearly has a lot of love to give. He will tell anyone willing to listen the story of his sister’s cat’s litter and how she flew all the way to LA to bring him a kitten, and his friendship with Monty is obviously something he cherishes deeply. He has a good and goofy heart under there. The idea of family is extremely attractive to him, and he genuinely loves being on set and part of a close-knit team working to bring something enjoyable into the world.
And on that note, he’s very good at his job. His academic performance was always limited by his ability to try, but he is an extremely talented actor and an intelligent man who works hard at what he does. He's entirely capable of being serious and knuckling down, and his transformations in and out of character between set are a little astonishing. Not a lot of people get to play pretend for a living, and Jeannot is very much aware of his great good luck, willing to do whatever he can to make the production a success. And maybe make out with a few castmates.
